Sally McKenzie

Sally McKenzie, a BSc Mathematics and Statistics graduate from Newcastle University, has over 12 years of experience teaching mathematics in secondary and post-16 schools across the North East. Her innovative teaching fosters a growth mindset, helping students achieve exceptional GCSE and A-level results, with many advancing to top UK universities.

A key figure in enhancing A Level and Further Mathematics standards, Sally contributed to the national development of mathematics education through the Archimedes North East Maths Hub, notably shaping resources for the Level 3 Core Maths programme. She also engages in professional development, including MEI’s TAM course, and contributes to exam marking to refine her practice.

Beyond teaching, Sally supports extracurricular activities like music, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, and Erasmus projects. As a parent, she values creating a supportive, engaging environment to inspire a love for mathematics. Now as Maths Outreach Lead, Sally is excited to promote mathematics education across the North East and help students reach their potential.

Sam Waterfield

Sam Waterfield is an experienced and dedicated mathematics educator with a strong commitment to advancing post-16 mathematics education. Currently a teacher at Durham Sixth Form Centre, he also serves as the Post-16 Lead for both the Archimedes NE Maths Hub and the Great North Maths Hub, where he drives strategic initiatives to enhance teaching and learning across the North East. With extensive teaching experience in a wide range of mathematics courses, from GCSE to A level and beyond, Sam has a proven track record of delivering outstanding results, often placing his department among the top performers nationally.

Sam has a passion for supporting student progression and actively promotes the uptake of mathematics at post-16 level, working to make the subject accessible and appealing to students of all backgrounds. His work includes organising prestigious events like the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge and fostering partnerships with Durham University to provide students with university-level exposure.

In addition to his teaching, Sam is deeply committed to professional development, holding a Master’s in Education and Chartered Mathematics Teacher status. He has led school-wide initiatives, particularly in embedding technology and blended learning strategies, and has made significant contributions to mathematics education in the region through his role with the Maths Hubs. His strategic vision, combined with his extensive network and expertise, positions him as a key leader in the ongoing development of mathematics education in the North East.
