Maths Schools run highly impactful outreach programmes, engaging with local schools and communities to ensure that every child in every region of England has the opportunity to thrive mathematically and that schools and teachers are well-prepared to foster mathematical talent wherever it may arise.

U-Maths, the University Maths Schools Network, contributes to national thinking on mathematics curriculum, teaching and learning and supporting each Maths School to bring about exciting and stretching maths outreach.

Senior Team Maths Challenge

Durham Sixth Form Centre, in partnership with Durham University, is delighted to host a full-day maths event. The day will include:

  • An engaging maths lecture
  • A Q&A session with Durham University students
  • The UKMT Senior Team Maths Challenge (afternoon session)

Event Schedule

  • Arrival: Please arrive by 9:30am for check-in
  • Start time: 10:00am
  • Finish time: 4:00pm

Team Information

  • Each school may enter one team
  • Teams consist of four students (Year 12–13 in England & Wales / Year 13–14 in NI / S5–S6 in Scotland)
  • A teacher must attend and will take part in the Challenge
  • No more than two students from the older year group per team (e.g. max two S6s)
  • Please let us know if an additional teacher or staff member will attend

Practical Information

  • Lunch: Students should bring a packed lunch; lunch is provided for teachers
  • Please bring snacks and water – all events are nut-free
  • Parking details will be sent out before the event
  • Some venues may take photos on the day; to opt out, please email teams@ukmt.org.uk

  • Entries must be submitted by registered UKMT centres (not individual students or parents)
  • Only one team per centre may be entered

Maths Outreach (volume 1)

Sally McKenzie

Sally McKenzie, a Newcastle University Mathematics and Statistics graduate, has over 12 years of experience teaching mathematics in secondary and post-16 education, helping students achieve outstanding GCSE and A-level results, with many progressing to top UK universities. She has played a key role in advancing A Level and Further Mathematics standards, contributing to national curriculum development through the Archimedes North East Maths Hub and shaping resources for the Level 3 Core Maths programme. As Maths Outreach Lead, she is committed to promoting mathematics education across the North East, inspiring the next generation of mathematicians.

Sam Waterfield

Sam Waterfield is a highly experienced mathematics educator and Post-16 Lead for both the Archimedes NE and Great North Maths Hubs, where he drives strategic initiatives to enhance mathematics teaching across the North East. With a proven track record of delivering outstanding GCSE and A-level results, he actively promotes post-16 mathematics, organises prestigious events like the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge, and fosters university partnerships to support student progression. Holding a Master’s in Education and Chartered Mathematics Teacher status, Sam is a key leader in regional mathematics education, particularly in integrating technology and innovative teaching strategies.
