Mathematics is not just a subject – it’s a success story. Our outstanding team of seven dedicated and innovative teachers consistently deliver exceptional results, with A Level Maths being our largest and one of our highest-achieving subjects. But our ambition stretches far beyond grades.

The team is passionate about igniting a lifelong love of mathematics, both within our classrooms and across the wider region. The department leads from the front – sharing best practice, mentoring colleagues, and driving forward maths education across the North East. Sam Waterfield, a Chartered Maths Teacher, leads regional A Level pedagogy hubs and co-hosts the DSFC-based annual Maths Teachers’ Conference. Ryan Ng, former Core Maths regional lead, has played a key role in upskilling fellow professionals. Together, their work has supported dozens of schools and hundreds of learners.

Durham Sixth Form Centre’s Maths Outreach programme is growing rapidly through the support of Providence Learning Partnership, with masterclasses and enrichment delivered to local 11-16 schools. This culminates in the annual Summer Maths Challenge Gala – an inspiring event for Year 10 students designed to raise aspirations and transform outcomes in GCSE Mathematics.

With high achievement, professional leadership, and regional impact at its core, mathematics at DSFC is thriving – and changing lives.
