Durham Mathematics School is being delivered in partnership between Durham University, Durham Sixth Form Centre (Providence Learning Partnership) and the Department for Education. Our combined expertise and passion will ensure effective leadership and the ultimate success of this ambitious and exciting project.
Meet our project team below.

Ellen Beveridge

Chief Executive, Providence Learning Partnership

Ellen is the Chief Executive of Providence Learning Partnership, taking on the post in 2023 having been Headteacher at Durham Sixth Form Centre since 2013 and in the teaching profession for over 25 years.

Peter Bowcock

Associate Professor, Department of Mathematical Studies, Durham University

Peter is our mathematics expert from Durham University, Associate Professor in Mathematical & Theoretical Particle Physics. Peter and his colleagues will support the students of DMS by providing stretching education focusing on wider mathematical problem solving to enable students to better manage the move to degree-level mathematics.

Tony Fawcett

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), Durham University

Tony is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Education at Durham University, and Professor in Biosciences. He studied for a B.Sc. in Applied Biology at Trent Polytechnic and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Leicester University before completing two Postdoctoral Research posts at Durham University and being appointed to a lectureship in Durham in 1995.

Alan Houston

Chair of Trustees, Providence Learning Partnership

Alan was a Professor of History and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) at Durham University. Prior to his recent retirement, Alan was also a member of the Executive Committee and responsible for delivering the University’s education strategy. Before coming to Durham, Alan was a member of the Senior Leadership Team at the University of California, San Diego.

Edward Twiddy

Chief Customer Officer, Atom Bank

Edward is Chief Customer Officer and one of the founders of Atom Bank. Before Atom, Edward was the first Director of the North East LEP, spent 12 years at HM Treasury in various roles, worked in the Middle East on development and reconstruction programmes and on a number of environmental consultancy projects.

Jane Wilkinson

Senior Project Manager, Strategy Delivery, Durham University

Jane works in the Strategy and Delivery Unit at DU. The university strategy is built on the three pillars of research, education and wider student experience, but also on the university’s keen sense of community and of inspiring others to achieve their potential. Jane brings her expertise to the project management of DMS.
